An oil diffuser self-care companion
This project was dedicated to creating a design that could be used during and after the current pandemic. Keeping up with your mental health is always important, especially during distressing times. Dew helps users become more comfortable with addressing their mental health and being proactive about keeping themselves mentally and physically well.
Initial Research
Understanding the market and designing with intention
A survey was conducted along with thorough research to understand what people are experiencing as they live their lives in the four walls of their homes. Understanding what users need and how to achieve these goals through design was assessed and displayed in an infographic summarizing the main details and areas for improvement.
Concept Development
Creating a design that meets the user all the way
The goal of Dew was to combine two existing products into a new product; the fusion of a smart speaker component and an ultrasonic oil diffuser in a way that was aesthetically pleasing and feasible. This dual-functioning product now has the potential to replace these individual tech devices in the home, optimizing space and accessibility for the user.
Final Design
Optimizing details and features to form a successful design
The final details are ironed out such as form, components and how they fit together, and the user interaction with the smart speaker and the companion app. Features such as changing the colour of the LED light component, light intensity, and diffusing timer are added along with other customization to create a truly unique experience for each user.
User Interface
Bridging gap between the user and the digital world
Unlike competitors, Dew comes with a companion app that is guided towards promoting mental health practices. Here the user can not only have added customization with their diffuser but also make goals, plans to meet them, and see their progress; receive further information about popular essential oil scents; track their mood daily; and customize Dew through a Bluetooth connection. Dew is a hands-free design, operating with the app as little or as much as preferred by the user.
Final Render
Accurately visualizing the product and its features
Developed in SolidWorks, all outer components and some inner components were modelled for Dew. This allows accurate visualization of the plastic housing and speaker mesh texture, as well as some insight into how the product would be manufactured. This product is most applicable in the bedroom, office, or living room where Dew’s intelligent feedback and responses can be heard optimally. This project was an excellent way to practice in-depth user research and modelling techniques to bring a successful product to life.
